Sheriff Rochelle Bilal Clarifies Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office Policy on ICE Presence at Courthouses
Philadelphia, PA – Philadelphia Sheriff Rochelle Bilal released a video statement today addressing public concerns about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity around city courthouses and reaffirmed the Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to fairness, safety, and equal protection under the law.
“Let me be very clear: the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office does not partner with ICE,” said Sheriff Bilal. “Our deputies do not assist ICE, share information, or participate in immigration enforcement. Our responsibility is to maintain safety and security inside the courthouses for everyone.”
Sheriff Bilal emphasized that when ICE agents enter a courthouse, deputies verify credentials and ensure all courthouse procedures are followed. ICE agents are not permitted to make arrests inside the courtrooms or anywhere inside the courthouse.
Outside of courthouse property, the Sheriff’s Office has no legal authority to intervene in lawful activities conducted on public grounds.
“Inside the courthouse, everyone’s rights and safety are protected equally under the law,” Bilal added. “We are law enforcement professionals who follow the law and do not violate it, and we ask everyone to do the same for their safety.”
The Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office remains committed to protecting public safety, ensuring fairness, and upholding the rights of every individual who comes into contact with the court system.
