Statement from the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office
on the Retirement of Undersheriff Tariq El-Shabazz, Esq.

The Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office announces the official retirement of Undersheriff Tariq El-Shabazz, Esq., effective May 13, 2026, marking the conclusion of his distinguished service to the City of Philadelphia and his retirement as a dedicated city employee.

Throughout his tenure, Undersheriff El-Shabazz served as a key leader within the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office, bringing legal acumen, operational leadership, and a steadfast commitment to advancing the office’s mission.

In his role as Undersheriff, he provided oversight and strategic guidance across numerous critical functions, including deed processing (pre- and post-sales), policy development, legal oversight, real estate transactions, civil and criminal proceedings, Right-to-Know matters, and the drafting and review of complex contracts and legal agreements.

His contributions strengthened the Sheriff’s Office’s operational framework while ensuring legal compliance, administrative efficiency, and improved internal processes that support both the agency and the residents it serves.

Sheriff Rochelle Bilal reflected on his service:
