RE: Sheriff’s Sale Fund Disbursements
The Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office remains committed to transparency, accountability, and the responsible management of all funds entrusted to the Office.
An internal review initiated under new Real Estate Department leadership identified approximately $20 million in sheriff’s sale proceeds that had been processed and queued for disbursement but had not completed the final payment steps. At the time, the existing system did not generate alerts or notifications identifying outstanding disbursements requiring additional action, contributing to the delays.
Upon identifying the issue, the Sheriff’s Office immediately initiated corrective action, processed outstanding payments, and began reconciling affected accounts. This was an administrative processing and oversight issue, not an indication that funds were missing.
Corrective measures have since been implemented. The Sheriff’s Office has updated its tracking procedures and established system alerts to flag transactions requiring additional action. These improvements are designed to ensure timely disbursements, accurate reconciliation, and greater accountability. As with any technology upgrade, adjustments to existing workflows are necessary to ensure the system functions effectively and supports consistent oversight.
The Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office continues to operate effectively and fulfill its statutory responsibilities. All summer 2026 sheriff’s sale proceeds have been disbursed within the required timeframes, and enhanced monitoring procedures are now in place.
The Office’s proactive identification of these issues, immediate corrective actions, and continued modernization demonstrate its commitment to sound financial management, operational efficiency, and public accountability.
