Sheriff Rochelle Bilal Urges Philadelphia Residents to Avoid Celebratory Gunfire and Violence Ahead of the New Year

PHILADELPHIA, PA — As the New Year approaches, Sheriff Rochelle Bilal has released a public video message urging Philadelphia residents to celebrate responsibly and refrain from celebratory gunfire and violence, emphasizing the serious and often deadly consequences of such actions.

In her message, Sheriff Bilal reminds the public that celebratory gunfire is illegal and dangerous, noting that bullets fired into the air inevitably return to the ground and can strike innocent people, including children and families.

“Celebratory gunfire is not harmless—it is dangerous, illegal, and can take an innocent life in seconds,” said Sheriff Rochelle Bilal. “As we ring in the New Year, I urge everyone to choose joy, safety, and responsibility. Violence has no place in our celebrations.”

The Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office works year-round to promote public safety and prevent avoidable tragedies, particularly during holidays when incidents of gun violence tend to increase. Sheriff Bilal encouraged residents to look out for one another, put firearms away, and help ensure that celebrations do not turn into moments of loss.

Residents are reminded to report illegal activity and emergencies to 911 and to celebrate the New Year in ways that keep families, neighbors, and communities safe.
